Kris Srikkanth Explains Why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Should Not Debut in India vs England 1st T20I
India’s team selection for the opening T20I against England has become a major talking point after former captain Kris Srikkanth advised against handing teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi his international debut.
Although Srikkanth believes the 15-year-old should have been given an opportunity during India’s recent T20I series against Ireland, he feels the team management should now avoid making changes at the start of a challenging series against England. His comments come as India prepare to announce their playing XI for the first match, while England have already confirmed their lineup, leaving out fast bowler Jofra Archer for the contest at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street, Durham.
The decision on India’s final XI will be announced by captain Shreyas Iyer at the toss.
What Happened?
Ahead of the first T20I between India and England, Kris Srikkanth shared his preferred India playing XI and explained why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi should remain out of the side despite his impressive rise.
India enter the series after a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Ireland, increasing scrutiny over team selection. While many fans have called for Sooryavanshi’s inclusion following his remarkable IPL campaign, Srikkanth believes stability is more important at this stage of the England series.
England, meanwhile, have already named their starting XI, with experienced pacer Jofra Archer omitted from the opening match.
Srikkanth’s preferred India XI features:
- Abhishek Sharma
- Sanju Samson
- Ishan Kishan
- Shreyas Iyer (captain)
- Tilak Varma
- Shivam Dube
- Axar Patel
- Harshit Rana
- Prince Yadav
- Arshdeep Singh
- Varun Chakravarthy
The former World Cup-winning opener has also backed Varun Chakravarthy’s return alongside Axar Patel as India’s two frontline spin options.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth said Sooryavanshi should have debuted during the Ireland series rather than being introduced against England.
“He should have 100% played the second T20I against Ireland. Abhishek Sharma should have been rested after scoring a brilliant fifty in the first match. Instead, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi should have been given that opportunity.”
However, he believes the opportunity has now passed.
“He might even have won India that game because he has shown he can perform in difficult conditions during the IPL. But since he didn’t play against Ireland, I won’t play him in the first two T20Is against England.”
‘Vaibhav should have played against Ireland’
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earned his maiden India call-up after an extraordinary IPL 2026 season with the Rajasthan Royals.
The teenage left-handed batter amassed 776 runs in 16 matches, scoring at a remarkable strike rate of 237.30 while playing a key role in helping Rajasthan Royals qualify for the playoffs.
His explosive batting quickly established him as one of India’s most exciting young talents, leading to widespread calls for his international debut.
India’s recent T20I series loss to Ireland has intensified discussions over whether fresh faces should be introduced or whether the team should persist with its established combinations heading into a high-profile series against England.
Srikkanth’s Analysis
Srikkanth’s selection philosophy highlights the balance between rewarding emerging talent and maintaining team stability.
While he acknowledges Sooryavanshi’s exceptional IPL performances and believes the teenager deserved an opportunity against Ireland, he argues that introducing a debutant at the start of a competitive series against England could disrupt an already settled batting order.
His comments also underline an important selection principle: young players often benefit when they are introduced in relatively lower-pressure situations before facing elite opposition.
The final decision, however, rests with captain Shreyas Iyer and the Indian team management, who must weigh Sooryavanshi’s outstanding domestic form against the importance of continuity following India’s recent setbacks.
