Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali Confirms F1’s Long-Term Plan to Return to India

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali speaking about Formula 1's plans to return to India
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali says India remains a priority market as the championship explores a long-term return to the Indian Grand Prix calendar.

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has reaffirmed the sport’s ambition to return to India, saying F1 remains committed to bringing a Grand Prix back when the right promoters, partners and investment structure are in place. Although no official timeline has been set, Domenicali described India as a priority market for Formula 1’s long-term global expansion.

India last hosted a Formula 1 race at the Buddh International Circuit between 2011 and 2013, before the event was removed from the calendar due to taxation and financial challenges. More than a decade later, F1 believes the country’s rapidly growing fan base makes it an important market for the future.

Will Formula 1 Return to India?

According to Stefano Domenicali, Formula 1 wants to return to India, but the project depends on securing the right commercial partnerships and long-term financial backing.

Speaking to FanCode, Domenicali said there is strong interest from Formula 1 in re-establishing a race in India, although a comeback is unlikely in the immediate future.

He explained that while no official date has been finalized, discussions continue as the championship evaluates opportunities in one of the world’s fastest-growing sports markets.

    Why Formula 1 Left India

India hosted the Indian Grand Prix from 2011 to 2013 at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida.

Despite attracting international attention, the race was discontinued because of taxation disputes, financial constraints and operational challenges faced by the organizers.

Since then, Formula 1 has repeatedly expressed interest in returning under a more sustainable business model.

Buddh International Circuit Could Play Key Role

Renewed optimism surrounding Formula 1’s return has grown following the Adani Group’s acquisition of key assets belonging to the Jaypee Group, including the area surrounding the Buddh International Circuit.

Although no agreement has been announced, the development has sparked fresh speculation that the circuit could once again host Formula 1 if the necessary commercial arrangements are finalized.

Formula 1 Expands Its Presence in India

While a race remains some years away, Formula 1 is actively expanding its presence across India.

Domenicali highlighted the championship’s partnership with FanCode, Formula 1’s official broadcaster in India, as an important step toward increasing awareness of the sport.

He also revealed that Formula 1 is exploring localized initiatives, including:

    • Regional language content
    • Social media expansion
    • Entertainment collaborations
    • Potential Bollywood partnerships

According to Domenicali, adapting content for Indian audiences is central to Formula 1’s long-term strategy.

India’s Formula 1 Fan Base Continues to Grow

India has emerged as one of Formula 1’s fastest-growing markets.

According to Formula 1, the country’s fan base increased from 79 million to 98 million in less than six months, highlighting the sport’s rapidly expanding popularity.

The impressive growth further strengthens India’s case as a future destination on the Formula 1 calendar.

What Needs to Happen Before F1 Returns?

Domenicali emphasized that hosting a Formula 1 race requires cooperation between multiple stakeholders.

Before India can return to the calendar, Formula 1 must secure:

    • Strong local promoters
    • Long-term commercial partners
    • Significant private investment
    • Sustainable financial planning
    • Government and organizational support

Only after those elements are in place will Formula 1 consider officially announcing a return.

Formula 1 Maintains India as a Priority Market

Although Indian fans may have to wait a few more years for the sport’s return, Domenicali made it clear that Formula 1 has not abandoned its plans.

With a rapidly expanding audience, growing commercial interest and continued investment in localized content, India remains firmly on Formula 1’s long-term roadmap as the championship looks to expand its global footprint.

    Key Takeaways

    • Formula 1 remains committed to returning to India in the future.
